This Hard Spile is inserted into the shive after the cask conditioning process has ended to maintain the correct level of carbonation before serving. It must be loosened or removed prior to serving, and replaced at the end of the night to maintain levels until the next day. In the case of a lively cask, a hard spile can also be used in the initial venting to prevent a beer shower.
